Ramadan: also called as Ramzan is the ninth month of the Islamic calender, and is observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting (Sawm) to commemorate the first revelation of the Qur'an to Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him). This annual observance is regarded as one of the Five Pillars of Islam. The faithful observers of Islam fasts from sunrise (Suhoor) to sunset (Iftar). During the fast, no food or drink is consumed. Fasting is a shield as we refrain ourselves not only from eating but also from committing minor and major sins. This purifies our minds and souls. Through fasting we learn to empathize with poor and the needy. We learn to have patience. This is the only month in a year, when we are all doing what we were created to do - worship in a state of brokenness and gratitude. This month brings nothing except goodness.
The Non-Muslims sometimes misconstrued Ramadan as a month of feasting instead of fasting. This misconception is brought up by the fasting Muslims themselves. Women are tirelessly engaged in cooking and preparation of numerous food items rather than devoting themselves to prayers. At Iftar time we end up overeating, hence suffer from indigestion, bloating, heart burn and the list goes on. And ofcourse we can't sleep with a heavy, churning stomach. Eat light in Iftar and incorporate only those food items which can provide you with essential nutrients.
